Second Grade Lessons
Week 35- Balloon Farm (Library Review Week)
- Students will review what they have learned this year.
- Students will complete a survey on the library this year.
- Continue to read with your child over the summer. The Falkville Public Library is a great place to visit!
Week 34- Search Destiny using Chromebooks
- Students will search our online catalog using the Chromebooks.
- Students will locate their materials by using the Call Number.

Week 33- Opinion Writing
- Students will begin writing their opinion papers using the reasons and details they created last week.
- Write an opinion piece with your child.
Week 32- Opinion Writing
- Students will continue working on their supporting reasons and details for which would be a better pet- chick or bunny.
- Ask your child to state reasons and details on their opinion.
Week 31- Opinion Writing
- Students will learn about writing an opinion piece.
- Students will list three reasons and details on which animal would be a better pet- chick or bunny.
- Allow your child to state reasons and details on their opinion.
Week 30- Limerick
- In celebration of Poetry Month, students will write their own Limerick poems.
- Write other limericks with your child.
Week 29- The Easter Egg
- Students will write their own story about an Easter egg after reading the story by Jan Brett.
- Decorate Easter eggs with your child.
- Allow your child to write stories or to retell stories to you.
Week 28- Dictionaries
- Students will practice looking up words in dictionaries, writing the definition, and creating a sentence using the words.
- Allow your child practice by looking up words in dictionaries and reading the meanings. Try using these new words in sentences.
Week 27- Celebrate Dr. Seuss- If I Ran the Zoo
- Students will create their own animal like Dr. Seuss did to live in the zoo. Students will provide facts and details about this made up animal.
- Ask your child about the animal they created.
- Read Dr. Seuss stories with your child.
Week 26- Biography Bowling
- The students will use their knowledge of biographies to locate the biography section and specific book using a call number. If students are correct, they are able to place their bowling pin in the lane. The class with the most pins and whose teacher knocks down the most pins wins!
- Ask your child what they know about biographies.
Week 25- Wish for a Fish
- The students will use Zoobooks and Ranger Rick magazines to explore non-fiction text features.
- Read magazines and non-fiction books with your child and identify non-fiction text features such as title, index, glossary, caption, photograph, illustration, and MORE!
Week 24- Famous American Research Report (Final Week)
- The students who have not finished will continue using Chatterpix to record the narrative of their Great American.
- Other students will spend time in writing and literacy centers.
- Download the Chatterpix app and create a Chatterpix with your child.
Week 23- Famous American Research Report
- Students will continue using Chatterpix to record the narrative of their Great American. The majority of the students should finish their project today.
- Talk to your child about the famous American they are researching. Help him/her find more information online.
Week 22- Famous American Research Report
- Students will begin using Chatterpix to record the narrative of their Great American. These videos will be shown at the second grade program.
- Talk to your child about the famous American they will be researching. Help him/her find more information online.
Week 21- Famous American Research Report
- Students will continue researching their chosen famous American and developing their own essay. This week's focus will be on finishing the research and writing the essay.
- Talk to your child about the famous American they will be researching.
Week 20- Famous American Research Report
- Students will begin researching a famous American and developing their own essay. This week's focus will be on choosing a person and completing the graphic organizer.
- Talk to your child about the famous American they will be researching.
Week 19- Mirette on the High Wire
- Students will read a new Caldecott medal book
- Students will take their mid year STAR test
- Read other books that have won the Caldecott medal
- Ask your student how he or she did on the STAR test. This assessment tells us their approximate reading level.
Christmas Break- We wish you a Merry Christmas!
Week 17- The Polar Express
- Students will write a letter to Santa using a friendly letter format.
- Make text to self connections
- Write a friendly letter with your child and mail it to someone.
Week 16- Christmas Around the World
- Students will discuss the Christmas traditions of those living in Germany
- Compare those to the traditions we have in the United States
- Discuss your own family's traditions with your child
- Research the Christmas traditions families have in other countries
Week 15- Journey of the Mayflower
- Students will learn about the journey of the Mayflower
- Students will use a STEM project to see if they can build a boat that will float
- Conduct other STEM experiments and activities with your child. Find ideas here.
Week 14- Book Fair!!!!!!!
Week 13- How to Cook a Turkey
- Students will write a "how to" paper on cooking a turkey using transition words such as first, next, then, and last.
- Write other "how to" papers with your child- how to make a sandwich, how to brush your teeth, etc.

- Students will be in centers this month practicing skills they have learned, creating with Makerspace, and using technology, and learning new skills with the teacher.

Week 7- Nonfiction Scavenger Hunt
- Students work with a partner to utilize their skills in finding and evaluating text features. They are responsible for answering questions and locate facts in the book using the text features.
- After your child reads nonfiction or informational material, discuss with them the facts they learned and what features they can use to locate information.
Week 6- Nonfiction Text Features
- Students have the opportunity to be hands on in nonfiction text. Students work with a partner to find nonfiction text features in their book.
- Ask your child to identify nonfiction features in books, reference material, magazines, and other print or online material.
Week 5- The True Story of the Three Little Pigs
- Compare and contrast this story with The Three Little Pigs that was read last week. Look at differences in characters, story, and point of view.
- Compare and contrast two stories on the same topic with your child
Week 4- The Three Little Pigs
- Discuss story elements (characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end) in preparation for compare and contrast two stories lesson
- Ask your child to identify story elements in their library books
Week 3- Fiction versus Nonfiction
- Compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction text features
- Look at fiction and nonfiction books to see how they are alike and different
- Look at a variety of books with your child and point our similarities and differences.
- Talk about the reason why these types of books are written- Fiction (tells a story) and Nonfiction (gives true facts and information)
- Talk about the various text features in fiction and nonfiction books- headings, types of pictures- photographs and illustrations, table of contents, index, glossary, captions, and MORE.
Week 2- Using the Library Catalog
- Students learn how to search for books on Destiny
- Students practice using the call number to find the book in the library
- Log onto the FES Library Catalog and search for books with your child
